A major goal of this conference is to provide up-to-date information about research on biomembranes and to consolidate cross-disciplinary international scientific efforts in this field. Our speakers will focus on cutting-edge problems of modern integrative structural biology of biomembranes and membrane proteins, theoretical biophysics of membrane systems and computer modelling. The conference will highlight the role of biomembranes and biological macromolecules in normal and pathological processes, aging and age-related diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s) and cardiovascular diseases.
The talks will be given by world-leading scientists from Russia, China, India, Brazil, Israel and other countries. Participants will have a great opportunity to update their knowledge interacting with world-leading scientists who will overview amazing recent advances in the fields under discussion.
The event is organized by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University), has an international format and is held on a regular basis since 2010. At present, four thematic conferences from the Biomembranes series have been successfully held in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
The first conference was held in 2010 (4-7 October 2010, Russia).
It was organized in the form of International Scientific School for young scientists. The conference covered modern fundamental medical and biotechnological aspects of the biological membranes research.
The second conference was held in 2014 (September 29 - October 3, 2014, Russia). More than 200 Russian and foreign delegates took part in it. The presented reports were focused on extremely hot topics of modern science: optogenetics, the structure and function of G-protein coupled receptors (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2012) and the prevention of aging and neurodegenerative diseases, superresolution microscopy (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014) for membrane proteins. A separate section was devoted to research methods, in particular, the international megascience project euXFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) (Hamburg, Germany). Further discussion of the results of this section was made at the round table in which leading foreign and Russian scientists took part.
More than 360 Russian and foreign scientists took part in the conference, organized in 2016 (September 26-30, 2016, Russia). The scientific program was presented by more than 40 lectures of leading specialists from domestic and foreign research and educational organizations. About 120 posters were also presented. Scientists from more than 10 countries took part in the conference.
Third the conference was held in 2018 (October 1 – 5, 2018, Russia). The number of in-person conference participants was 520 from Russia and abroad. During the conference live broadcast of the lectures in the internet has been organized and had from couple of hundreds to 1500 live listeners. The geography of the participants is more than 15 countries including Russia, Germany, the USA, China, France, the United Kingdom, Belorussia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy and others. More than 200 posters have been presented on the conference. About 300 participants who gave lectures and presented posters, published their theses in proceedings of the conference printed edition. The theses have been reviewed and published in electron version of peer-reviewed journal «The Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes».
The regular conduct of the conference promotes a fruitful discussion of the fundamental and applied aspects of modern integrative structural biology of biomembranes and membrane proteins, theoretical biophysics of membrane systems and computer modelling and more. The conference will involve world leading experts in this fields and the combination of participants’ expertizes will determine future prospective directions of development in this fields. The scientists successfully demonstrate to the world scientific community their significant contribution to many of the discussed scientific directions. No less important is the fact of establishing new contacts for subsequent fruitful joint research and cooperation. The conference will involve world leading experts in the fields of modern integrative structural biology of biomembranes and membrane proteins, theoretical biophysics of membrane systems and computer modelling and more.
